Fight as you were trained.
Historical Background
The Chicken Kick was personally taught to me by Ed Parker when I was just a white belt. When I was younger it was one of my favorite kicks. The "Chicken Kick" was passed on from generation to generation. I taught this kick to Tom Dunne at our main studio in San Jose in the late 60's. Tom Dunne would open a chain of Tracy's Studios in Miami FL. would then teach this kick to Bart Vale (then a young student) in the early 70's. In the video Bart shows just how effective this kick can be.
Explanation of the team photo
that appears on the video. This was the professional (Full Contact Fighting
Team)
: The Miami Vice.
You can't miss Bart, he is kneeling in the center. Tom Dunne, Bart's instructor,
is in the top row, 2nd from the right. Next to him is Tony Palamor, later world
champion.
Historical Note: Joe Lewis, Then the Tracy's National
Director, created "Kickboxing" in 1970. The first Kickboxing match
was Joe Lewis vs. Greg Baines. Joe Lewis knocked out Baines and Kickboxing took
off from there. During the early 70's, Joe would tour and gives seminars to all
our studios, introducing "Kickboxing" into the Tracy System.
Why is the "Chicken
Kick" so effective? In the Video, Bart is fighting a large, very experienced
full contact fighter.
Bart led the Chicken Kick off by starting to kick with his left foot. The
opponent reacted to this by dropping his forward right hand to block Bart's left
kick.
Bart's opponent never saw the right kick that knocked him out!
Story Time: One of the best kickers ever turned out by Tracy's was a student of Ray Kingenberg's, Paul Healey. He had the chick kick down to perfection. In two different tournaments Paul fought Carlos Bunda, then a top ten national fighter. In both fight Paul Healey knocked him out with the Chicken Kick. Carlos Bunda states "It's time to retire, I never saw either of the kicks that knocked me out".
HISTORICAL NOTE: Carlos Bunda was the first person to rate the top 10 fighter in karate and this list was published in "Black Belt" magazine.

Tracy's "Twisting Dragon" :
Train as you will fight;
Fight as you were trained.
The opening action photo of Bart Vales shows him, in his studio, practicing the Tracy Kenpo technique "Twisting Dragon" where the opponent has caught and is holding your kicking leg. The counter is to twist in the air and throw a wheelkick to the opponent's head, while he is still holding your kicking foot!
USED FOR REAL!!
The photo - right after Bart does a "Full Slam of his opponent" -
shows Bart, in actual competition, using the exact technique "Twisting
Dragon", knocking his opponent out!
Historical Note: American
Kenpo does not teach this technique,
"It's too impractical"!
