THE HISTORY OF JAMES M. MITOSE

MOTHER:
Kiyoka (Yoshida - Kamatsu) Mitose

The mystery of James Mitose rests with his mother and her heritage.

Kiyoka Mitose was born in Japan in 1880. She had one older brother who was a Naval officer killed in combat during the Sino/Russian. Born of a wealth, powerful family both of the children were well educated and exposed to culture of their class. - Arrived in Hawaii on December 21, 1912 at the age of 22, aboard the S.S. Shinyo Maru! (we have a photo copy of the boat manifest from 1912, listing her and all the other passengers.).

She had married Otokichi Mitose by correspondence eleven months earlier in January 1912. Kiyoka was well educated, 4' 6" tall; she could both read and write English and came from two very powerful Japanese families: Yoshida (fathers side) Kamatsu (mother side).  She came from the same village as the Mitose family in Japan and knew Otokichi's younger brother, Juhie, whom she listed as a contact in Japan. Juhie was about the same age as Kiyoka. What ever had been planned years before was now being acted out. By marrying Otokichi by correspondence Kiyoko know used the name of Kiyoko Mitose thus covering here real name and heritage. If Kiyoka ever used another name it was of her mother Kamatsu - but never Yoshida!

(WWWTP?) Why would a highly educated woman from two powerful Japanese families, marry an illiterate farmer, old enough to be her father?
Since there was a great deal of fraud (correspondence - marriage by mail) to simply get into the U. S., they would not let Kiyoka set foot on Hawaiian soil until a legal/civil marriage ceremony was performed! The marriage ceremony was performed by a Shinto priest.
